Information for rail workers

Information for Rail Workers

Contractors must ensure their employees and subcontractors working on the Sydney Metro Northwest Project are competent and qualified to work on site.

Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT) requires all rail workers (contractors and subcontractors) to hold a valid Rail Industry Worker card or a Northwest Rapid Transit card with the relevant NRT roles to work on the project.

This section applies to workers deemed to be working in the rail corridor or “Red” zones (delineated live rail environments) who must comply with the Rail Safety Act and project specific requirements. If you are unsure if you are required to work in these areas, please contact your NRT representative.

Accepted cards

The cards below are accepted on the Sydney Metro Northwest Project.

Some rail workers may still hold a Rail Safety Worker (RSW) card, which is valid until the renewal date printed on the card. The process for RSW cards is the same as that for RIW cards on the Sydney Metro Northwest Project. RIW cards replaced RSW cards in April 2013.

Roles

All workers must hold a relevant NRT role on their RIW or NRT card before working on the Sydney Metro Northwest Project. Roles must be selected in the NRT Contractor Safety Management System. NRT roles can no longer be selected in the Rail Industry Worker System.

Please see the Induction & work requirements page for details about which roles to choose.

Inductions

There are a number of mandatory inductions required depending on the work your employee or subcontractor is performing on the Sydney Metro Northwest Project, such as:

For rail workers:

  1. Project Induction
  2. Worksite Induction
  3. Rail Induction

For rail workers also working in the tunnel:

  1. Tunnel Induction

Please see the Induction & work requirements page for details about which inductions to choose.

I need a new RIW card

If your employee or subcontractor intends to work on other rail projects, they should apply for a Rail Industry Worker card.

Once they’ve applied for and purchased a RIW card, you can go to the NRT Contractor Safety Management System to select their roles for the Sydney Metro Northwest Project. Please refer to the steps below.

Step 1 >

Register in the Rail Industry Worker system

If your company or employees are not existing Rail Industry Worker cardholders, you must first register your company in the system by supplying name, ABN and other details. You will then receive a login to begin adding your employees and uploading documents to support their qualifications and competence.

As part of your application, you will be asked to select at least one Rail Industry Worker role to purchase a card. You may select a role such as Around the track Personnel – National or NRT-RIW Card Application Only to submit a card application.

You will receive an email confirmation once an Australia Post ID check has been approved. Your employee’s profile can next be accessed in the NRT portal where you may select the relevant NRT roles for this project.

For more information about the Rail Industry Worker system, including the application process, please visit railindustryworker.com.au.

Step 2 >

Apply for roles in the NRT Contractor Safety Management System

With your employee completing an ID check with Australia Post, you may apply for role/s for them in the NRT Contractor Safety Management System to work on the Sydney Metro Northwest Project.

Login to the system here >> using your Rail Industry Worker system details.

From here, select your employees with RIW cards, and then select the appropriate NRT role for each rail employee.

Step 3 >

In the NRT Contractor Safety Management System, click Manage Roles to select the relevant worker,

Step 4 >

Search for the relevant work role/s and select them for that worker. Upload any required competencies, and go to the ‘optional’ section to select the relevant inductions.

Rail workers who will only work on the Sydney Metro Northwest Project do not have to hold RIW cards. If they choose, they may hold NRT cards with NRT roles to work on the project. NRT cards can only be used on the Sydney Metro Northwest Project. See I need a new NRT card for more information.
